What the County needs is a discussion of issues, not on the ethnic composition or the council. It is dissappointing that such a diverse county has such an un-diverse political machine, but it is more important that the best candidate win and not the right demographics.

Valerie Ervin's name recognition was earned and is the result of whole lot of hard work and years of committment to this community. Call it a luxury if you want to...but don't question her zeal based on the fact that people know her name—she's one of the hardest working people you will ever meet. And she's the only District 5 County Council candidate who can provide the leadership we need.

It's also a bad idea to pin Ehrlich's win on the whiteness of his opponents. That didn't stop any of the previous few Democratic tickets. They were just smart enough to come talk to black people before October.

To vote on merit alone is, to me, the most Democratic of virtues. "Merit" is admittedly in the eye of the beholder, but a lot of people suffered to make skin color a minor variable in the equation.

I think it's a bad idea to support Ike Leggett or Valerie Ervin solely on the issue of race. Their presence on the County Council, if solely as racial tokens, would also send a powerful message.

I've met Hans and find him to be very ambitious, but he should wait another four years and take the time to get involved in his local community. Should Steve and Hans win, we will have an all white council and executive -- and that will send a powerful message to our diverse community. Followng the shameful defeat by Bobby Haircuth four years ago, you would think we would have learned a thing or to about supporting minority candidates.
