To me, it's wasting land space just because we want three bathrooms instead of two, everyone needs a living room, not just a bedroom. One thing we need to remember in development is the community and shops like the ones you went to are what makes a real community.Kristenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04845402390111436277noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-86100844811910292322010-06-16T10:36:49.548-04:002010-06-16T10:36:49.548-04:00Dave, as someone who grew up in Wheaton and went t...Dave, as someone who grew up in Wheaton and went to the same high school (GC) as you did and now lives in Olney, I found your article very interesting. It also brought back many memories. However, I have one issue with what was mentioned. You said that with GC's relocation to Olney, it "implied that they want to keep lower middle class students like me from ever attending there again". I disagree with that. You also mentioned that "Olney was well represented at my high school". Doesn't it make sense that they just relocated to be where the majority of their students are located? Plus, they needed more space to grow. Anyway, I enjoyed your article.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-65822216661075016372010-06-16T08:48:56.325-04:002010-06-16T08:48:56.325-04:00Sorry if I misinterpreted the point of this post o...Sorry if I misinterpreted the point of this post or blog in general. But it seems that there is a constant bashing of places like Bethesda, olney and other western county areas which leads me to believe that the authors have something against these areas, even though there is a much larger carbon copy of those areas in Northern Virginia, but you never hear any contempt for those areas.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16909364853652061646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-33982573818802414182010-06-16T00:50:27.137-04:002010-06-16T00:50:27.137-04:00Actually, Mike, I have lived in Prince George'...Actually, Mike, I have lived in Prince George's County for the last seven years, thanks very much. And if you think there are friendly independent businesses in a walkable area here, you'd have to stick to Main Street Laurel and Hysttsville/College Park.

Wheaton, Silver Spring, and Bethesda were and still are the nice parts of Montgomery County, and I think you're completely missing the point of my post and Dan's blog.Davemurphyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07331653772702609738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-53537995660584038722010-06-15T20:25:37.283-04:002010-06-15T20:25:37.283-04:00I have an appreciation for both Wheaton and Olney....I have an appreciation for both Wheaton and Olney. They serve different purposes for very different types of people and that's fine. I also miss Phantasmagoria and the variety of different musical styles you could hear there. And "feral urbanism" is a great way to describe Wheaton. I love it!Cyndyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11787927933858782267noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-71376124368079254902010-06-15T19:39:04.625-04:002010-06-15T19:39:04.625-04:00Yeh sounds like this poster is just really bitter ...Yeh sounds like this poster is just really bitter about the over hyped wealth of Olney. Hey if u want cute run down urban areas move to PG County they have plenty of that, godforbid MoCo still has some nice parts left. I guess this poster and this blog rather all the wealth and affluence in the dc area occur in Northern Virginia rather then suburban maryland. Which is seen in the almost constant bashing of bethesda and western MoCoUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16909364853652061646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-63922235248194250192010-06-15T18:35:09.931-04:002010-06-15T18:35:09.931-04:00As someone who grew up in the early 80s in Wheaton...As someone who grew up in the early 80s in Wheaton and then spent the late 80s in Olney, I had a very different experience. Sure, I was urbanized in Wheaton, Glenmont and Aspen Hill. But your Olney sounds very different than mine. I remember wandering the vast wooded areas that extended from Emory all the way to Rock Creek Park, all around Magruder and Lake Frank and Lake Needwood. I remember one of the last Kemp Mill Records in Montgomery County, located in Olney. There were bike shops and hardware stores, and book stores (Crown Books, part of the Haft Family Empire) that I spent hours in.

Too bad you missed all that.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07920679379129769862noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-69741477917208815602010-06-15T15:57:56.347-04:002010-06-15T15:57:56.347-04:00Well Said!!Well Said!!chippyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09853701426607869416noreply@blogger.com
