It only measures an address's proximity to commercial and institutional destinations, not the homes where students might be walking from. And it doesn't consider the actual pedestrian experience."

We need a measure that actually gets at the ability of kids to walk to the schools. In Montgomery County statistics probably are available on what proportion of the kids at each school ride the bus and, for high school students, drive to school. Maybe that kind of data could be used to develop a meaningful index of school walkability.Roberthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00180733496678026590noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-68862550776096317992014-01-01T15:40:54.986-05:002014-01-01T15:40:54.986-05:00Yes, this!
I walked to junior high in a small tow...Yes, this!

I walked to junior high in a small town, and then my family moved to the suburbs of NY, where I couldn't walk anywhere. Without a car, I felt like I'd been sent back to the parental dependence of early elementary school--and every year, there was a fatal or near fatal car accident among the students of my high school.

When my husband and I bought a house to raise our own family, buying a house zoned for a high school with lots of good public transit back and forth between home, school, public libraries, and so forth was a high priority for us. My kids will be able to take the bus & metro where they need to go when they are in high school.momhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16785807468793617745noreply@blogger.com
