I've had an interesting vantage point on this issue as an elite African-American tutor with experience catering to the Whitman/Churchill market early in my career. Do you feel that our focus should be on the immensely challenging political issue of desegregating our schools or challenging families with resources with who prefer segregation to subsidize public schools in the higher needs areas with the types of tutoring resources that they are able to provide for their children? It's important to realize that MCPS' vaunted SAT scores and AP scores in the higher income areas reflect in part how it benefits from families choosing to supplement around its weaknesses.Jasoneducatorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01741828726225647577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-19278074086670123262016-12-05T23:39:08.410-05:002016-12-05T23:39:08.410-05:00Came here after reading your post about de facto s...Came here after reading your post about de facto segregation in Montgomery County. The RFP they are proposing is a minimum 30 per cent affordable housing. Personally, I believe the decision should be delayed until the Elizabeth House recreation center is actually funded. That would give both Parks and county housing officials more time to refine their proposals. The problem is the process. The county executive has chosen to pursue one alternative. In my view, two competing proposals should go to the County Council for a side-by-side review and vote.
Woody Brosnanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05396619795756337811noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-89667358129930419232016-10-25T17:34:55.946-04:002016-10-25T17:34:55.946-04:00This is an excellent analysis of the important que...This is an excellent analysis of the important question: "What will happen to MoCo government if term limits are adopted. A couple of points, I am pretty sure the actual area slated for redevelopment in Westbard is considerably smaller than even our western portion of GL sector plan. They are not near a Metro nor a future Purple Line station. The 50% reduction in Westbard's density came from reverting the proposed CRT zoning on all industrial zones to industrial, thereby removing 1000 units. You could say that a coalition of dedicated hard working business people and residents have already taken several hundred units off the table through our successful advocacy to retain our small local business community. It could have been worse.

The real danger lies in continuing to think that we are a unique special community who should get a pass on the County's stated Smart Growth policy. Every community thinks they are unique and special, we are not so different...diverse? Just look around, again, we are not unique in that respect.

I have still not heard a valid argument for opposing the sector plan. Like every other community, we don't want too much affordable housing, no more traffic and fear school crowding...the same complaints as Westbard and Chevy Chase Lake.

leonorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02747673353057999425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30306615.post-50595864913729957872016-09-23T20:02:48.603-04:002016-09-23T20:02:48.603-04:00There are a lot of ideas to consider for this clos...There are a lot of ideas to consider for this close in neighborhood There are 'costs' but also 'benefits'.How those are measured depends on your perspective and where you live. Buildings going back to the 1880s are often "stacked townhouses." My home is a 1600 square foot 1912 full floor unit with its own entrance and a big garden which is shared with two other similar units in the building. We call these "flats" as opposed to "apartments" which are usually accessed of a common space or hall, and are just part of a floor.
Since most SF buildings are build from old-growth redwood, there is some noise leakage from other floors, but mostly footfalls and squeaky mattresses. But one gets used to this, and it's comforting in a way to feel like part of a big family made up of three families.
This is a very nice way to densify. I recommend it!
