pics from b'ville shopping center redevelopment

These are pictures from the largely-vacant Burtonsville Shopping Center at Old Columbia Pike and Route 198 which, after several years of deliberation, is being razed. In March, the Planning Board recorded plats for the new Burtonsville Town Square, an "environmentally-friendly" shopping center that may start actual construction later this year. You might remember that I did a three-part series on the project last summer.

The shopping center will displace the Dutch Country Farmers' Market, a local institution for over twenty years. As much as I was looking forward to the Town Square development - that is, before it transformed from an actual "town square" into a strip mall with hybrid parking spaces - I really do mourn the loss of the Farmers' Market as East County's only true gathering space. Every Saturday and Sunday morning, you were bound to see someone you know squeezing through the crowds in search of fresh produce or my favorite lemon squares. They'll be moving to Laurel, where they've been leasing space for over a year now in anticipation of much earlier demolition date, but it just won't be the same.

Not on Sundays, the market was open Thursday through Saturday.

I went to their new-ish location in Upper Marlboro. It's really nice, much roomier than the Burtonsville store but a bit of a ride from downtown Silver Spring.
